Celebrating 50 Years of Restoring Sight

In May 2026, Sankara Eye Foundation, India, proudly celebrated its Golden Jubilee, marking 50 years of transforming lives through the gift of sight.

Under the extraordinary vision and compassionate leadership of Dr. R. V. Ramani, what began as a small initiative in 1977 has grown into one of the world’s largest charitable eye care networks, providing high-quality, free eye care to millions across India.

Reflecting on Sankara’s journey of 50 years at the celebratory event, Dr. Ramani spoke of the profound transformation witnessed at its eye camps. Patients arrive on buses carrying the challenges of poor vision and limited access to care. “When they return after treatment, they leave with a broad smile, confidence, and clear vision. Sankara carries not just patience, but hope, dignity, and trust”, he said.

He also emphasized that every successful surgery is the result of a collective effort. “The silent strength of Team Sankara is behind every successful surgery; besides the surgeon, there are nurses, technicians, staff, and administrators – the strength of Sankara has always been this collective spirit.

Yet, throughout this remarkable journey, one principle has remained constant: “growth should never divert values.” Dr. Ramani’s vision has always been for every Sankara hospital to uphold the same ethics, transparency, and compassion, regardless of its size or location.

Guided by these enduring values, and strengthened by the unwavering support of donors, volunteers, partners, and the dedicated Sankara team, the organization continues its mission to restore vision and transform lives in underserved communities.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Dr. R. V. Ramani and the entire Sankara family on 50 extraordinary years of service. May the next chapter bring even greater impact—and illuminate countless more lives with the gift of sight.
